Nalu, meaning “wave” in ‘ÅŒlelo Hawai’i, connects me to my roots and the stories that have shaped my life. Growing up on O’ahu, I watched the waves and saw how they symbolized the flow of knowledge, traditions, and identities across the Pacific. Our ancestors didn’t just navigate these waters; they used them to connect with one another, sharing stories and wisdom that have been passed down through generations.
As someone with both Pacific and Asian ancestry, I’ve experienced firsthand how these cultures blend and enrich each other. I believe that stories from both Oceania and Asia are essential to understanding our shared history and identity. The vibrant traditions of the Pacific Islands, combined with the rich cultural influences from Asia, have created a unique tapestry that is deeply personal to me, especially in Hawai’i.
At Nalu Books, I aim to share these stories—often untold but vital to who we are today. By bridging cultures through literature, I hope to inspire a deeper appreciation for the unique heritage of this region.
What does Oceania and Pasifika mean?
Oceania describes the geographic region that includes the islands and nations across the Pacific Ocean. This describes the physical expanse and interconnectedness of the Pacific instead of just one group of people.
Pasifika offers a more inclusive way to refer to the people of the Pacific Islands. This term embraces and honors the diversity of cultures, identities and lived experiences of Pacific peoples. This helps to counter the common misconception that all Pacific Islanders are Polynesian.
Before colonization, the Pacific was not divided into Micronesia, Melanesia, or Polynesia. Our ancestors viewed the ocean as a unifying force, not a barrier. They voyaged between islands, sharing cultures and resources.
These terms acknowledge the shared heritage of all Pacific Islanders while respecting their diverse origins. When referring to someone from the Pacific, it’s best to ask how they prefer to be identified rather than assuming. This approach shows respect for individual identities and the diverse cultures within the Pacific.
What does BIPOC mean?
BIPOC stands for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. While “People of Color” is a broad term that includes all non-white individuals, the inclusion of Black and Indigenous specifically recognizes their distinct histories, struggles, and the ongoing systemic oppression they continue to experience.
What does representation mean to Nalu Books?
At Nalu Books, representation means seeing ourselves authentically reflected in everything we consume—what we read, watch, listen to, and the resources we use to teach our keiki (children) and ourselves. It’s about amplifying primary sources and voices from within our communities, rather than those appropriating our cultures.
We prioritize inclusivity, giving space to voices that have been marginalized or silenced, and challenging narratives that misrepresent diverse experiences.
Representation is about empowering authentic voices to tell their own stories and shaping how future generations learn and grow.
